May is Mental Health Awareness Month: Let us Check In with Ourselves.

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we at NAMI want to remind all Nigerians living in Manitoba that your mental well-being is just as important as your physical health. Living away from home, adjusting to a new culture, weather, and lifestyle can be exciting; but it also comes with unique stressors. You are not alone.

Being part of the Nigerian diaspora means we often carry multiple responsibilities: family back home, adapting to a new system, career demands, and sometimes the silent struggle of isolation. That’s why now, more than ever, it’s important to check in with ourselves and take intentional steps to protect our mental health.

Here are a few simple ways you can take care of your mental well-being:

  1. Stay Connected:
Maintain regular communication with loved ones, both here and back home. Don’t isolate yourself. Join community groups like NAMI, attend events, or just check in with a friend.
  2. Seek Professional Help When Needed:
There is no shame in talking to a therapist. In fact, it’s a brave and healthy decision. Manitoba offers free or low-cost mental health services. Start with your family doctor, or call Health Links at 811 for support.
  3. Practice Self-Care:
Whether it’s taking a walk, journaling, attending a place of worship, or cooking your favorite Nigerian meal, make time for activities that bring you peace.
  4. Talk About It:
Mental health is not a taboo. Start the conversation in your home, with your kids, your spouse, or your peers. Let’s normalize seeking help and offering support.
  5. Know You Belong:
You are not alone in your journey. Join cultural associations, faith-based groups, or volunteer. Community connection builds resilience.

Remember: taking care of your mind is a form of strength. This May, let’s commit to prioritizing our mental health and checking in on ourselves and on one another.

NAMI cares. Your wellness matters.
