NAMI President Commends Landmark Achievement of Bill Recognizing Nigeria’s Independence Day in Manitoba.
Manitoba’s Nigerian Community Celebrates Progress Towards Formal Recognition of October 1st.
The Manitoba government’s presentation of a bill officially designating October 1st as the Celebration of Nigerian Independence Day marks a significant stride forward for the Nigerian community in the province. The initial passage of the bill’s first reading has garnered widespread commendation, with the President of the Association of Nigerians in Manitoba (NAMI) leading the chorus of appreciation.
President Vera Keyede of NAMI hailed the bill’s presentation as a pivotal milestone and a testament to Nigerians’ enduring contributions to Manitoba’s cultural landscape. In a press statement following the bill’s first reading, she expressed profound gratitude to the Manitoba government for taking the initiative to formally recognize Nigeria’s independence and acknowledge the rich heritage of the Nigerian community.
“This is an auspicious moment for all Nigerians in Manitoba,” Keyede remarked. “The proposal to designate October 1st as the Celebration of Nigerian Independence Day is a significant recognition of our collective resilience and determination. It serves to reaffirm our identity and commemorate the sacrifices of our ancestors who fought for freedom and self-determination.”
Introduced by Health, Seniors, and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara, the bill has received broad bipartisan support. It underlines the importance of formally acknowledging Nigeria’s independence to honour past sacrifices and inspire future generations. Minister Asagwara, the first and only Nigerian member of the legislative assembly, emphasized the significance of this recognition in fostering unity and appreciation within the community.
With over 7,000 Nigerians residing in Manitoba, the bill holds immense significance, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among its members. President Vera Keyede highlighted the bill’s potential to raise awareness about Nigerian history and culture among all Manitobans, promoting greater understanding and appreciation.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Minister Asagwara and the Manitoba government for their steadfast support,” Keyede said. “This bill’s recognition of Nigeria’s independence celebrates the resilience and contributions of Nigerians to Manitoba’s diverse tapestry. It exemplifies the values of inclusivity and unity that define our province.”
As preparations commence for the inaugural Celebration of Nigerian Independence Day on October 1st, the Nigerian community in Manitoba eagerly anticipates commemorating this historic occasion with pride and joy. Through cultural festivities, educational initiatives, and community engagement, October 1st will serve as a time to reflect on Nigeria’s journey to independence and celebrate its enduring legacy in Manitoba.
This bill’s presentation and first reading signify a significant step forward in fostering greater recognition and appreciation for Manitoba’s Nigerian community. As President Vera Keyede aptly stated, it marks a moment of triumph for unity, diversity, and inclusion in the province.
