NAMI FAMILY PICNIC: A DAY TO REMEMBER! Community. Culture. Connection. And Correct food!

This year’s NAMI Family Picnic was all about what truly matters, family, community, and connection. It was a joyful gathering where parents, children, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and friends came together to unwind, share stories, eat good food, and create lasting memories.

Held under the bright Manitoba summer sky, the picnic was a beautiful reminder of the strength and warmth of our community when we come together as one big family.

A Day of Bonding, Laughter, and Pure Joy

From the cheerful chatter of elders under the tents to the playful screams of kids in the bouncing castle, the entire park echoed with happiness. Families enjoyed games, music, dancing, and plenty of space to just be together, laugh out loud, and relax.

It was especially heartwarming to see intergenerational moments – grandparents sharing stories, parents connecting with other parents, and children making new friends. It was more than just a picnic – it was a celebration of belonging.

Good Food, Full Bellies, and Happy Hearts

No family gathering is complete without good food – and this picnic did not disappoint! Our amazing vendors served up authentic African delicacies that had everyone lining up for more. From jollof rice, puff puff, and suya to meat pies, moimoi, and fried rice, the food brought that extra touch of home and happiness.

Wildfires Still Raging

The Northern part of the province continues to deal with wildfires, which have led to many being evacuated, and a steady decline in the air quality of the province. The fires have gotten to the point where we are experiencing record numbers, such as 1.5 million Hectres of land being burned. We owe it to our environment to reduce the risk of fires, keep all outdoor burning to a minimum and keep the inhabitants of Northern Manitoba in our prayers.

The Ruling in the Case of Afolabi Opaso Expected to Occur in August

In 2023, Afolabi Opaso was shot by Winnipeg police following a well-being call about a possibly armed man who was erratic. The Alberta branch of the Independent Investigation Unit was tasked with investigating the shooting in a bid to avoid any perceived conflict of interest. It was discovered that a Justice employee for Manitoba Justice is closely related to one of the police officers involved in the shooting.

The report from the investigation is believed to be ready this month-August 2025, and it will help offer the family of Opaso the much needed closure they need for this incident
