Here’s to a year of growth, joy, and big achievements. Let’s make it a great one together!

Celebrating Oyíndàmólá Aláká’s Leadership and Community Impact

The Nigerian Association of Manitoba Inc. (NAMI) is proud to celebrate Oyíndàmólá Aláká, who has been recognized as a 2025 Manitoba Mosaic Award recipient in the Young Bridge Builder category.

The Young Bridge Builder Award honours outstanding young leaders under the age of 29 who are creating meaningful connections across cultures and generations while advancing inclusion and understanding within Manitoba. Oyíndàmólá’s recognition reflects years of intentional, community-centered work rooted in service, collaboration, and advocacy. Her community engagement began long before this moment of recognition. As a young newcomer who immigrated to Winnipeg from Lagos, Nigeria, in 2012, she experienced firsthand the challenges and possibilities that come with settlement and integration. These lived experiences shaped her deep commitment to ensuring that newcomers, youth, and underrepresented voices are not only welcomed, but meaningfully included in leadership spaces.

Since her days as a student at Fort Richmond Collegiate, she has consistently worked to build bridges across cultures and generations. Her efforts have focused on nurturing inclusive spaces, supporting youth and newcomer leadership, and strengthening collaboration across communities. True to her character, much of this work has been done quietly behind the scenes, driven by purpose rather than recognition.

This award affirms the impact of Oyíndàmólá’s approach to leadership. One grounded in empathy, intentionality, and action. It also reinforces the importance of creating pathways for voices that are often missing from decision making tables. As a young leader, she continues to advocate for not just representation, but the genuine integration of youth and newcomer perspectives into policies, programs, and strategic decisions.

NAMI is especially proud to have nominated Oyíndàmólá Aláká, for this prestigious honour. Her work exemplifies the values of service, excellence, and community upliftment that our association strives to promote. Her achievement is not only a personal milestone, but a moment of pride for the Nigerian community in Manitoba.

We extend our congratulations to Oyíndàmólá Aláká, and our gratitude to the Government of Manitoba, the Honourable Malaya Marcelino, Minister of Labour and Immigration, and all partners involved in championing inclusion through the Manitoba Mosaic Awards.

On behalf of the Nigerian Association of Manitoba Inc., we celebrate Oyíndàmólá for her leadership, her humility, and her unwavering commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of her work and are honoured to stand beside her on this journey.

5th Canadian Black Summit 2026 Officially Announced

The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, representing the Michaëlle Jean Foundation, officially announced the 5th Canadian Black Summit 2026 on December 16, 2025, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Manitoba.

The event brought together distinguished dignitaries, community leaders, and stakeholders, underscoring the summit’s role as a national platform for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy on issues affecting Black communities across Canada. The 2026 summit will take place from September 18 to 20, 2026, and is expected to build on past successes by promoting leadership, equity, and meaningful change.

Mastering WINTERpeg

Moving from the tropics to the Prairies is a major transition, but as Nigerians in Manitoba, we don’t just survive the cold, we master it! Here is your quick guide to staying warm and healthy this season.

  1. Master Layering. Don’t rely on one heavy jacket. Use the Three-Layer Rule:
  • Base: Thermal wear (polyester or wool).
  • Middle: A thick fleece or wool sweater to trap heat.
  • Outer: A windproof parka rated for -30°C and a toque that covers your ears.
  1. Protect Your Glow. The Manitoba air is incredibly dry. Switch from light lotions to heavy duty creams or Shea Butter to prevent ashy skin. Since the winter sun is weak, consider Vitamin D supplements to keep your energy and mood high (consult your doctor first).
  1. Walk Like a Penguin Sidewalks often have black ice. To avoid falls, lean your weight slightly forward and take small, flat-footed steps, just like a penguin.

If you drive, remember to plug in your block heater when it drops below -15°C.

  1. Internal Heating Use our heritage to your advantage. A steaming bowl of Pepper Soup or Ginger Tea isn’t just delicious, the spices help improve circulation and keep you warm from the inside out.

Stay Connected: Winter can feel long, so don’t isolate. Check in on your friends. A quick call or a shared meal makes the colder days feel much shorter!
