Volunteer of the week

Nkem Oyaghire loves adventure, and volunteering is its own kind of adventure.

She moved to Winnipeg in 2024 by herself, with no family here, and shortly after signed up to become a volunteer with NAMI.

Oyaghire spends half of her time working as a data analyst and the other half on her hobbies, which include but are not limited to roller skating and crocheting. Summer is her favorite season, as it gives her the chance to go on walks, try new foods, people-watch, and spend as much time as possible with her friends.

While she has limited experience with volunteering, she is no stranger to it, as she grew up with a mother whose love for people manifests in service to others—volunteering whenever she can, both in professional and religious capacities.

Nkem wants to be like her mother, and volunteering is a good place to start.

Her favorite part of volunteering in the publicity department of NAMI is the celebration of people that the department affords her. Giving people their flowers on a stage, no matter how small, encourages others to do good. She is also very fond of the work that goes into the newsletters. Nkem hopes that Nigerians in the community who find joy in service know that NAMI is a great place to volunteer.
