Personality of The Week

The 2022 Protein and Co-Products Division Lifetime Achievement Award recipient with 20 years of work experience as an independent investigator with a focus on the structure-function properties of bioactive food proteins and peptides. A professor in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences and the director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. Dr. Aluko sits as the Canada Research Chair in Bioactive Peptides.

Dr. Aluko obtained his BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bellow University, Zaria, respectively and completed a PhD degree in Food Science at the University of Guelph, Ontario. His independent research career began as a Research Scientist with Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research Centre, from where he moved to the University of Manitoba in 2001 as an Assistant Professor in the then Department of Human Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology. Dr Rotimi has over 250 articles in Refereed Publications and four patents to his name in addition to been a very good table tennis player.

Honorable minister of advanced education, skill and immigration received with delight some executive members of NAMI led by President Wilson Akinwale as they discussed ideas and insights on ways to enhance immigration pathways for Nigerian skill workers and newcomers, recognition of international degrees and experience plus the introduction of more diverse ethnic curriculum in post-secondary institutes.

Elmwood Community Resource

Elmwood Community Resource launches the Newcomer Gender Based Violence counselling program and BIPOC project

The Zone Newcomer Settlement Program will include a gender-based violence prevention and intervention called “Bloom”.

This new addition to our ZSW program will provide both short term and long-term counselling services for individuals facing family violence and intimate partner violence.

Bloom program provides one on one counselling supports to ZSW individuals and families facing GBV.

Trained counsellors with backgrounds in social work and marriage and family therapy will work closely with families and individuals, applying a cultural lens to case management as they skillfully assess and collaborate through an anti-oppressive, strength based and trauma informed perspective. Bloom is available Monday to Friday 9:30-4:30pm.

IRCC last week announced the end of the temporary pause on Express Entry draws and promised to resume inviting qualified candidates to apply for permanent residence in July.

Call for Culture Day Workshop facilitators

Acadia Junior High is looking for a group that can participate in their school Culture Day on May 6th, 2022. They are looking for a few workshops about various aspects of African culture to teach students about.

Volunteers would have 40 minutes to run the workshops on the morning of May 6. The workshops can teach students about any aspect of a culture in an engaging way (i.e. craft, storytelling, dance, food, music, language, etc.).
