Craving Fresh Fish Pepper-Soup? This One Na Your Chance!
My people, have you been craving fresh fish pepper-soup like the one that hits different on a cold Manitoba evening? Have been craving correct fisherman soup, fresh fish banga or stew? Well, guess what, this might be the perfect time to go and catch the fish yourself. No jokes!
The Manitoba government has given everyone a sweet opportunity to enjoy the outdoors for free during spring break.
From March 27 to April 5, you can go fishing anywhere in Manitoba without needing a fishing licence. Yes o! Just carry your fishing rod, find one correct lake, and start casting. Who knows? That fish wey you catch today fit land inside your pot of hot pepper-soup, grilled fish, or fish stew later that evening. Na serious enjoyment!
And it doesn’t stop there. During the same period, entry into all Manitoba provincial parks is completely free. That means you can gather your family, your padi dem, pack small snacks, and enjoy the outdoors together. Whether fishing, small picnic, or just strolling around the park, its a good way to relax and enjoy nature.
According to Manitoba’s Minister of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures, Ian Bushie, the idea is to make it easier and more affordable for families to step outside and spend quality time together.
But make we clear something, even though the fishing licence is free during this period, the normal fishing rules still apply. You still need to follow limits on how many fish you can keep, size restrictions, and any special rules for certain lakes or rivers. And if you are fishing inside a national park, you will still need a federal fishing licence.
Another small heads-up: many lakes are still frozen around this time, so please shine your eyes. Ice conditions can change quickly, so make sure you check before stepping on it. Safety first, my people.
And here is another sweet part, provincial parks will remain free for the entire month of April. So even if you miss this spring break window, you still get time to explore Manitoba’s fine outdoors.
So Nigerians in Manitoba, if you have been dreaming about that correct bowl of fish pepper-soup, this might just be your moment. Gather your people, try fishing for the first time, and who knows, the fish wey go enter your pot fit come straight from the lake
PST Tax Removal
Good News for Grocery Shoppers in Manitoba:
The Manitoba provincial government has announced a new change in its latest budget that will help residents save money on groceries.
Starting July 1, the province plans to remove the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on all food items sold in grocery stores.
This means several everyday items that were previously taxed will now be tax-free. Items expected to be exempt include:
- Prepared foods such as sandwiches, soups, rotisserie chickens, and prepared fruits and vegetables
- Carbonated drinks, fruit juices, and dealcoholized beer and wine
- Baked goods
- Snack foods such as candy, chips, salted nuts, and granola
According to the province, this tax change is expected to reduce Manitoba’s revenue by about $24 million, but it is intended to help families manage the rising cost of food.
For many residents, including members of the Nigerian community in Manitoba, the change could mean small but helpful savings when buying ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and drinks from grocery stores. Read more

Government of Canada raises the federal minimum wage
The Government of Canada has announced that starting April 1, 2026, the federal minimum wage will increase to $18.15 per hour. This increase represents a 21% rise since the federal minimum wage was first introduced in 2021 and is intended to support workers in federally regulated private-sector jobs, including industries such as banking, telecommunications, and interprovincial transportation. The federal minimum wage is indexed to inflation, meaning it will continue to be adjusted regularly to help workers keep up with the rising cost of living.
The wage increase is part of broader efforts by the federal government to improve affordability for Canadians, alongside other initiatives such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and the Food Security Fund, which aim to help households manage the cost of food and other necessities.
For many workers across Canada, these measures are intended to provide greater financial stability while supporting a stronger and more inclusive economy.
